What to bring to your next holiday party

It’s that time of year, holiday get together’s with friends and family.  The question always is, what to bring the host.  Here’s a few ideas, that are original and will fit any budget:

Santa hats for wine:

I purchased these little Santa hats and put them right on top of the wine to bring the host.  I found these at a dollar store by me (they were actually 2 for $1), but you can find them at any arts and crafts store. It’s a cute alternative to those generic foils bags with the ribbons tied around the top.  Also a cute idea is to buy an ornament and hang it around the bottle.

Funky, cool way to serve desserts:

This is a fun little cake server by Wild Eye Designs,  They come in all different colors and styles and are dishwasher safe.  I found this one at Home Goods, but you can also go on Amazon.com

Or how about a little music?:

Putting yourself down for a nap

Sleep Masters Sleep Mask

There’s nothing better and rejuvenating then a nap.  But did you know it has health benefits?  When you sleep, you release growth hormone, the antidote to cortisol which which boosts your immune system, reduces stress and anxiety, and aids in muscle repair and weight loss. Napping gives your brain a chance to rest and your body a chance to heal.  Now while it may be frowned upon at your workplace to crawl up under your desk and conk out for 1/2 hr, the weekend is a great chance to take advantage.  I find that a good mask helps me fall asleep faster and have recently found the creme de la creme of sleep masks, Sleep Masters Sleep Mask.  It completely shuts out light and fits securly around your head, so no shifting around while you sleep.  Enjoy your nap!

The ultimate blush

Nars has great shades of blush that I have loved for years.  By far the best blush they have is Orgasm.  It’s a perfect pink-peach shade with accents of golden shimmer.  It works on all skin tones and is always a favorite for makeup artists.  Just the name alone will make you blush!

My new Iphone, my new case

So I finally defected from Blackberry (love you Blackberry, but our time has come to an end).  I joined the masses and got a SmartPhone, particularly an Iphone.  My decision for an Iphone was easy (it’s fun, I can do 10x more with my phone now, I have a Mac already, etc. etc.), the real dilemma was deciding on the case!  It’s the biggest commitment to an accessory I’ve made in a long time.  Do I get one that will last all seasons?, do I get one that’s “in” right now?  After much shopping around I found the perfect one and who would’ve thought at J Crew??  Love, love, love it!

Parmesan Chicken from Ina Garten

Ina Garten's Parmesan Chicken

Parmesan Chicken recipe from Ina Garten, Food Network

I love Ina Garten.  Her recipes are so user friendly and always come out perfect.  This is one of my favorite recipes for the weeknight, it’s easy, delicious and light.

Ingredients

4 to 6 boneless, thin sliced chicken cutlets

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 extra-large eggs

1 tablespoon water

1 1/4 cups seasoned bread crumbs

1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan, plus some shavings for serving

Olive oil

Salad greens for 6, washed and spun dry

1 recipe Lemon Vinaigrette, recipe follows

Directions

Combine the flour, salt, and pepper on a dinner plate. On a second plate, beat the eggs with 1 tablespoon of water. On a third plate, combine the bread crumbs and 1/2 cup grated Parmesan. Coat the chicken breasts on both sides with the flour mixture, then dip both sides into the egg mixture and dredge both sides in the bread-crumb mixture, pressing lightly.

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large sauté pan and cook 2 or 3 chicken breasts on medium-low heat for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until cooked through. Add more oil and cook the rest of the chicken breasts. Toss the salad greens with lemon vinaigrette. Place a mound of salad on each hot chicken breast. Serve with shaved Parmesan slices.

Lemon Vinaigrette:

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons)

1/2 cup olive oil

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Yield: 6 servings

Wax on, wax off

Everyone who knows me knows I love candles, who doesn’t really?  But with my love of candles have come some mishaps along the way…ex: wax dripping on my nice wood table.  Here’s a way to remove wax easily while preserving your wood furniture.

Removing wax from a wooden table:

Fill a zip lock bag with ice, place the sealed bag over the spilled wax for about 20 minutes, until the wax is hard and brittle.  With a plastic spatula, scrape the wax off working slowly so you do not scrape the wood.  Once the wax removed, use a few drops of vegetable oil and a cloth and rub it into the table, this will remove any remaining wax.

Glass cleaning, windows, mirrors….

I found the best way to clean mirrors and windows is to use newspaper instead of paper towels.  For some reason the ink from newspapers takes care of those annoying streaks easier.  And you’ll save money on paper towels!
